The Phoenix
Known as "The Phoenix" because she was built from the ashes of Roxane and
Sparrow Hawk and because she arose from the ashes of a stunningly spectacular
75 mph high-side during pre-season testing. After two seasons of showing
other WERA South Central Region racers
that they could "beat the devil", I have changed my CMRA
number to #80 from my previous #666.
So, what's in `er? Glad you asked....
Engine
-
Fairly stock motor with 1mm over pistons and polished stock rods.
-
The cylinder heads came off Sparrow Hawk with Joe Gilbert Porting
-
Megacycle X-1 cams degreed in at 105 lobe centers bump 2.5mm
oversize intake valves and stock exhaust valves.
-
The pipe is the well worn D&D with aluminum canister and thermal
coated head pipes. We have run this pipe for two seasons now and still
like it.
-
The clutch is a Barnett Kevlar unit similar to the one that made it
through the entire endurance series last season plus a couple dozen sprint
races and practices.
-
The carbs are polished stockers with a Ti Factory Pro jet kit, spun
aluminum velocity stacks and Uni-filter foam small-child-stoppers.
-
The ignition uses the stock black box with a Factory Pro adjustable
ignition advancer. Why the stock black box? `Cause I got tired of breaking
stuff with the 10.2 box!
Front End
-
Stock forks with Progressive brand springs and Race
Tech Gold Valve kit. PVC spacers are used to adjust for my weight as
I alternately get serious about racing and loose weight then look at my
results, get drunk and gain weight.
-
EBC floating rotor on Goof2 front wheel. In
combination with Motul brake fluid and EBC
green pads, I can either smoke the front tire (scary) or lift the rear
tire (Gee... Did I do that???). So how much more brake do you need?
Chassis
-
Fox rear shock, `cause everyone else has one and the stocker will kill
you!
-
Custom made aluminum tube subframe from Henderson Racing that mounts
the oil cooler and the Air
Tech rear cowling with dzues fasteners.
Here's another look at the oil cooler,
and another, and the oil
cooler adapter plumbing.
-
The fairing is from Sharkskinz
and is half the weight of the old RC31 fairing we ran before. ALSO! the
fairing is worth 500 RPM on the straight at Texas World Speedway. That's
the good news... The bad news is I'm having to redo all my gearing charts.
(Ohhhhhhhhh, poor baby!) The windscreen is from Gustafsson.
-
The Phoenix rolls on Michelin Slicks from David Hirsch at Island Racing
Services. David is not only good at mounting tires and taking your money,
he has some good advice if you'll listen and he doesn't try to sell you
more tire than you need. Check
out his site!
