Heading back Southwest on Utah SR-9, out of Zion National Park, we
came to the tight-knit community of Virgin. Turn North onto Kolob Road
and head for the reservoir 24 scenicly twisting, roller-coastering
miles away. This beautiful road dips in and out of the park itself and
working ranch land. There are plentiful indicators that this has been
working ranch land for several generations. I doubt we saw a dozen
other vehicles either headed up or coming back. The scenery was as nice
as anything we'd seen in the park proper without the crowding, fumes
and noise. We visited with a gentleman who'd driven up to fish in the
reservoir. As I watched him put on the third layer of clothes before
donning his waders, I realized just how chilling that snow runoff water
had to be.
